CommentsThe inoculation was successful as disease developed uniformly but was slightly less severe due to very dry conditions. Multiple check entries were included (19-21 times); means for each check are reported; Infection was read on an average of F-2 and F-3 leaves. Severity scale used was 0-100 based on the diagrammic scale of Clive James 1971. Description of adult infection response scale: Four general classes (resistant, moderately resistant, moderately susceptible, and susceptible) were distinguished based on the type (presence of necrosis and chlorosis) and relative size of lesions observed. Resistant (R) IRs were characterized by small (<2 mm long) round to oblong dark brown necrotic lesions, while moderately resistant (MR) IRs were characterized by medium-sized (2-4 mm long) elliptical dark brown necrotic lesions with no to slight diffuse marginal chlorosis. Moderately susceptible (MS) IRs consisted of medium to large (4-6 mm long) elliptical light brown necrotic lesions with marginal chlorosis, while susceptible (S) IRs consisted of large (>6 mm long) elongated elliptical light brown necrotic lesions with expanding areas of chlorosis. IRs of R and MR are considered indicative of low host-parasite compatibility, whereas IRs of MS and S are considered indicative of high host-parasite compatibility. For the purpose of analyzing data, the infection response scale is converted to a numerical scale as follows: Only the most predominant IR is used (that which is listed first, for example, an IR of MS-MR would just be MS in the formatted data), then they are converted to numbers such that S=1, MS=0.8, MR=0.4, and R=0.2. To calculate the infection coefficient, the % disease severity is multiplied by the IR. The two most informative data sets will be the % severity and the infection coefficient, for each rep, as well as the means of each from both years. The IR in and of itself may not be informative; still it may be interesting to run the analysis with this disease phenotype parameter. See the raw data file for further annotations and explanations.

In 2009 the Toronto International Data Release Workshop agreed on a policy statement about prepublication data sharing. Accordingly, the data producers are making many of the datasets in T3 available prior to publication of a global analysis.
